Maybe it’s from all the stories about how, when my grandparents were broke during the Great Depression, the neighbors would call my dad and his brothers in for after school snacks.
Or the times my godfather took me to return empty 7-Up bottles, made of glass, for two cents apiece.

It’s not like I’ve ever been destitute. I’m wealthy beyond anything my elders could have imagined.

I’ve wanted to sail, to quote Jimmy Buffett, “since I was three feet tall,” but my first move wasn’t to buy a boat. I invested in a single lesson.
I fell in love with the conservatory where I ultimately earned my masters degree when I was an undergrad, but I audited a class before I even applied.

I knew I wanted to enroll in her coach training after devouring Finding Your Own North Star, but it felt like an even bigger investment than grad school – emotionally if not financially – so I started with a two-day workshop.
